Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are all weeds treatable?

The majority of weeds that we see in lawns are treatable. There are, however, some exceptions. Quack Grass and Tall Fescue are common grassy weeds that are not controllable. There are also some controllable weeds that take several weed control applications before they can be eliminated.

How tall should I mow my grass?

Mowing tall is very important to the health of your lawn. If you mow your grass too short, it becomes very easy for your grass to burn out. It also gives weeds the opportunity to invade your lawn. We recommend mowing at three inches or higher during the summer months. Don't forget to give your lawn at least one inch of water a week too!

What is thatch?

Thatch is the decaying root system that is lying on top of the soil. When the thatch layer builds up, water, air, and fertilizer cannot reach the roots of the growing grass. Dethatching helps to keep the thatch under control, allowing your lawn to get the most out of your fertilizer treatments.

It rained after you sprayed, is that okay?

Generally, a half hour is all that is needed with most herbicides. Rain or watering generally helps to bring the product through the plant, speeding up the process.

How long should the dog and kids stay off the lawn after you spray?

We recommend the following day. Some people are more sensitive than others. The leading cause of exposure is through the skin, mostly your hands. Make sure the children are not directly playing or rolling around in the grass after we spray. The dog can go out, but make sure it’s not eating the grass.

I have weeds on the edges of my lawn, did you miss that spot?

No, our professional applications include a “blanket” coverage of the lawn and we pay special attention to the edges. Weeds typically out-perform cool season grass in these areas because they are more exposed and have poor subsoil. These areas can also accumulate salt, sand, and rocks from the roadway and/or driveway. Weed seeds can often collect on the edges and grow abundantly.

What are some good watering tips?

If we get rain at least once a week, there is no need to provide additional water unless you are establishing new grass. Water deeply but infrequently. It is best to water in the morning when it is cool.

Why does my lawn turn brown in the summer?

The grasses that make up our local turf are cool season grasses. They go dormant in the summer when it is dry, and they will green back up when regular rainfall returns. The only way to kill a lawn is to water it frequently and shallowly, encouraging a shallow root system. If the root system is too shallow, the stressed turf may actually die rather than enter its normal dormancy period.

Why should I use a lawn care service?

When you consider the cost of doing it yourself, it makes sense to have someone else do it for you. You don’t have to worry if you have enough gas and/or oil for the mower, you won't have to store fertilizers and weed control in your home, and you won't have to waste your weekend pushing the spreader or mowing your lawn. So, sit back and relax and let us do the work for you.

Does Nick’s Lawn Service have a guarantee?

Nick’s Lawn Service’s full program customers have our satisfaction guarantee. If, between applications, you have persistent treatable weeds or have concerns with your lawn, just give us a call.
